Pictures from an exhibition

It was packed upstairs at Mingle Cafe/Bar last night as Tika’s exhibition was officially opened. I don’t think anyone thought to count numbers, but it was cosy. Three paintings had been sold prior to the opening and another on the night, but there’s plenty of time to purchase as the exhibition runs through to the end of September.

The raffle raised IDR5.680.000 and was won by Ibu Elda Amalo, who wasn’t there on the night but the prize was accepted by one of her employees.

Much to everybody’s surprise, three further draws were made. The winners were treated to an on-the-spot portrait sketch from Gusti’s nephew Bagus Rai, an accomplished artist himself. Mr Bill, Dayu Uma and Kalandra Meiry were very happy with their unexpected gift.

Without much need for formality, Pak Edy made any necessary announcements and the evening became a very pleasant social Sunday night. Tika wishes to thank everybody concerned but particularly her young protegee Arisantika Dewa who spent hours with Tika pulling this exhibition together.

Arisantka

Thanks also go to Alison and the staff of Mingle Cafe/Bar for the venue and the food and Pak Edy for his short speech that reminded everybody of why we were there – the children of ADI Rare Bhuana.

Enjoy some more photos from a lovely night, one that also found one new sponsor for a child or young person in Karangasem.

And finally, thanks to Tika, for her hard work in creating this lovely exhibition. Two paintings now need to be packed and despatched – one to Singapore and one to Jakarta. Great work from everybody concerned.

Building an exhibition

Yesterday Tika, Gusti, Bawa and Alison put in the hard yards to mount the exhibition at Mingle Cafe/Bar. No doubt lots of Mingle’s excellent coffee during the work, and maybe an espresso martini or two afterwards as a reward for a job well done.

Don’t forget. Sunday, 5pm onwards. Fundraising for the children.

Dancing feet

Tika is really enjoying working with mixed media as her latest collection shows. Feet are a-tapping with glittery shoes. Smaller than her usual work at 30x40cm, these would look fantastic in a group.

Ballet, tap  … come along on Sunday to see what else she has produced, or watch this space. Here’s a taster.

And of course, shoes remind us that the children of the villages need shoes for school. Shoes for the wall help buy shoes for the children. Go Tika!

Tika’s ‘Kebaya’ art series

As many will know, some of the funding for ADI Rare Bhuana comes from the sale of Tika’s art. It’s not surprising that she has had several successful exhibitions in Spain, as her use of colour and whimsy must be very appealing to the Spanish sensibility. Often her work features women, and a recent ‘Mother and Child’ series warmly celebrates the motherhood bond.

Lately she has been playing with mixed media, and the result is a stunning series of (at the moment) five, called the Kebaya series.

Every Balinese woman must own at least one kebaya, the beautiful and feminine lace blouse worn for temple. One is never  enough though, as ceremonial obligations can require different colours to be worn for different occasions. Tika is very aware that most of the mothers of the children of ADI Rare Bhuana cannot afford this essential item. At the same time she realised that offcuts of lace were simply being thrown away by the tailors.  Inspiration!

Lace, batik and acrylic paint have been combined to beautiful effect in her Kebaya series, as you can see.

These paintings will form part of a fundraising exhibition of Tika’s work to be held a little later in the year (details to be finalised) but can be sold and shipped beforehand to interested buyers.

Paintings are mostly 95cm x 75 cm, unframed
Mixed media on canvas
Price IDR5.000.000
Shipping to be calculated, depending on location. Or can be collected on your next trip to Bali, which will be soon ya?

From an earlier post, you will realise that this amount (check the conversion on XE Currency) can pay for education for a year for 2.5 children, but it could also provide kebayas for a number of women, as the need surfaces.

What do you think? Aren’t they lovely?  Please email if you would love one of these in your home.
